Where is the Home Alone House? A Look Inside the Iconic Suburban Chicago Movie Home

Kevin enjoys his time at Natalie's mansion with his new bedroom, latest gadgets, and his life. In the next morning, Peter and Natalie go out for a bit while Kevin stays at the mansion with Natalie's butler Mr. Prescott and maid Molly . While Mr. Prescott makes Kevin a milkshake, he goes into the security room and gets caught by Mr. Prescott who gives Kevin another chance. With Peter and Natalie still away, Kevin notices his old nemesis Marv , a remaining member of the Wet/Sticky Bandits and new sidekick/wife Vera outside the house. Kevin tries to contact Mr. Prescott on the intercom, but for some reason he doesn't respond. While driving, Marv tells Vera about his encounters with Kevin and states that they have someone on the inside to help them in their plot.

Here’s a view later in the movie showing the green walls and red carpeting of the upstairs hallway. BTW, in real life, this house did NOT look anything like this! This color scheme and decorating were done specifically for the movie. Today, the McCallister house would be hard to recognize inside.

Despite clear similarities, Hopkins notes that the real house's interior doesn't quite look identical to the movie

Kevin then attempts to use the security camera footage to prove himself, but discovers that the camera had been turned off and is caught by Mr. Prescott (who Kevin now believes to be Marv and Vera's ally). Molly then appears and gets Kevin out of trouble. As Peter, Kate, Buzz, and Megan arrive, Kevin — with Buzz and Megan's help — prevents a final escape attempt from Marv and Vera. The royal family and Natalie arrive, and the offenders' plot to kidnap the prince is revealed to Natalie's shock. Mr. Prescott, per Kevin's advice, resigns from his position as her butler. Realizing that their relationship was built on infatuation rather than love and was affecting his responsibilities as a husband and father, Peter breaks up with Natalie, and reconciles with Kate and their children.

I do love the wallpaper that we get a glimpse of here in the living room of the home. Another shot across the kitchen/breakfast area. This is in the early part of the movie when Kevin first realizes he is alone and can do whatever he wishes. So he’s running, running, running through the house because there’s no one home to tell he can’t.

The royal family and Natalie arrive, and Natalie is confused when she sees Molly getting arrested. An FBI agent reveals that Molly's the boss and that she, Marv and Vera masterminded the plot to abduct the prince. For the film, production changed the interior of the house just slightly, adding a ramp over the staircase and putting up new wallpaper. The crew built an outdoor stairway to the basement and a treehouse, both of which were removed when production was over. The new owners may have done renovations to the home since then, but from the outside, it looks the same.

But even if you watch Home Alone every holiday season — or many more times throughout the year —there are probably some things you still don’t know about John Hughes and Chris Columbus’ joint masterpiece. For movie fans, the brick suburban residence featured in the 1990 movie Home Alone is almost as familiar as Macaulay Culkin's adorable mug from the beloved holiday flick. Macaulay- who is probably sitting at home after watching this and going why?

The producers had hoped that this movie would lead to aHome AloneTV series if popular enough, several of the main cast members had clauses in their contracts that would have bought them back for such a series. However the movie failed to perform up to expectations in the ratings, and the series was never commissioned. Since no one believes him about the heist, Kevin decides to deal with matters himself, and sets booby traps for Marv and Vera. The next morning, Peter and Natalie go get the royals and Kevin is left back at the house. Kevin tricks and locks Mr. Prescott in the basement, but then he discovers Marv and Vera's real ally is actually Molly who also turns out to be Marv's mother as well. Where did the family go during the four months of filming?

According to the listing, Kevin's big brother Buzz—whose role in Disney+'s Home Sweet Home Alone remake found him growing up and becoming a security expert—will serve as your "host." At the airport, Peter suspects that something is wrong back at the house with Kevin and takes a cab back to Natalie's to check on him. Kate, Buzz, and Megan also drive to the mansion due to the suspicious nature of the calls received by Kevin himself and Molly. Kevin uses an altered recording of Marv's voice to provoke an argument between him and Vera, and knocks them down a flight of stairs with a remote-controlled plane. The duo is then tricked by Kevin with a secret wall switch, ends up being launched onto a chandelier, and are knocked unconscious by their fall. Molly, having escaped, grabs Kevin, but is quickly knocked out by Mr. Prescott who also escaped via the dumbwaiter shaft and calls the police.

As the mansion is prepared for a party for the royal family's arrival, Peter and Natalie go to pick them up, while Kevin notices Marv and Vera disguised as caterers. He traps Mr. Prescott in the freezer, overhears Marv and Vera's plan to kidnap the prince for ransom, and forces them out of a window. The royal family is unable to attend the party because their flight was canceled, so Peter and Natalie decide to announce their engagement instead. Marv and Vera run back into the house and pursue Kevin, who accidentally ruins the party by running into the guests and knocking over an ice sculpture that turns out to be a frozen Mr. Prescott. Angered, Peter sends Kevin to his room, refusing to believe his story and accusing him of trying to sabotage his relationship with Natalie, who threatens to evict him if he misbehaves again. How you described your style, traditional, cozy, with a little country is exactly what I love as well.

Everyone oversleeps and it’s mad chaos the next morning when the airport van arrives to pick everyone up for the flight to Europe. Kevin is forgotten and left peacefully sleeping in his attic room. The family is over the ocean, well on the way to Europe before this is discovered. All flights are booked so it takes days for Kevin’s mom, Kate, who is played by Catherine O’Hara, to get back home to check on Kevin. The father, Peter, played by John Heard, stays with the rest of the family on the trip.

French movies are great experts in using colors to tell us about the mood of the character or the mood of the moment. Thanks for that tour and pointing out all that red and greeen. Another section of the living room…very traditional decor. Here’s the attic room where Kevin spends the night.

Kevin then plays a recording of Marv, making it sound like he's insulting Vera, which causes them to argue. Marv then gets hit by Kevin's electric aircraft making him fall and rumble down the stairs. Marv and Vera are then tricked by Kevin with a secret wall switch, end up swinging from a chandelier, and they fall and are knocked unconscious. When smugly wishing them a merry Christmas, Molly had escaped from the elevator and grabs Kevin threatening him with a pan, but Mr. Prescott knocks her out with a serving tray.
