The captain, Francesco Schettino, is serving a 16-year prison sentence for manslaughter, causing a shipwreck and abandoning a ship before all the passengers and crew had evacuated. Carnival Dream is currently homeported from Galveston, offering 6-night Western Caribbean sailings and 8-night Eastern Caribbean cruises, with the occasional longer Journeys cruise on its schedule. The ship is scheduled to remain sailing from Galveston through at least April 2025. The ship is currently sailing a 6-night Eastern Caribbean itinerary, having departed Port Canaveral, Florida on Sunday, December 10. The ship has already visited Nassau, and is visiting Amber Cove on Wednesday, just hours after the rescue. A Coast Guard Operation Turks and Caicos MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew later rescued six other crew members after Carnival notified officials they were missing.

Carnival cruise ships have made a number of such rescues in 2023, as have other cruise line’s ships all over the world. The survivors “were reported in good health,” the Coast Guard said in a news release. Officials advised that Carnival Vista resume its route and the ship continued to its planned stop at Amber Cove on Wednesday. In a first step to prevent pollution of the shore and assist in a refloat the ship, its oil and fuel tanks were emptied. Prosecutors blamed the delayed evacuation order and conflicting instructions given by crew for the chaos that ensued as passengers scrambled to get off the ship.

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines has decided to equip one of its LR1 product tankers with a combination system that both captures a portion of the CO2 emissions from the exhaust as well as acts as a SOx scrubber. The system, which is being supplied by the Netherlands-based Value Maritime, will be the first commercial installation of a CO2 capture system on a Japanese vessel as well as the first LR1 tanker and largest vessel to employ the Filtree System.The... Highlights of Carnival Dream include the WaterWorks aqua park, Guy’s Pig & Anchor Bar-B-Que, the Serenity adults-only retreat, Bonsai Sushi, Guy’s Burger Joint, Cloud 9 Spa, Alchemy Bar, and Seafood Shack. “It was a night that, in addition to being a tragedy, had a beautiful side because the response of the people was a spontaneous gesture that was appreciated around the world,” Ortelli said. Carnival Cruise Line’s sister brand, P&O Cruises, was also involved in a rescue a few months back.

Passengers aboard the Concordia were largely left on their own to find life jackets and a functioning lifeboat after the captain steered the ship close too shore in a stunt. He then delayed an evacuation order until it was too late, with lifeboats unable to lower because the ship was listing too heavily. The ship’s officers then spotted six men on a life raft and stopped to rescue them and bring them onboard, the company said. One of Carnival Cruise Line’s cruise ships, the Carnival Vista (133,500 gross tons), rescued six crewmembers from a small cargo ship lost overnight, December 13, approximately 30 miles north of Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic. The US Coast Guard also became involved in the search and later found six additional crewmembers floating in the ocean.

They also coordinated with Carnival’s Fleet Operations Center in Miami and the local Coast Guard. According to Carnival, the men had been aboard a small cargo vessel that capsized overnight. The Dominican Republic Coast Guard responded to the scene and is leading the search for six other crew members from the vessel who were still missing. Caribbean refugee rescues are often more common in the winter months, outside of the active hurricane season.

The cruise ship was not significantly delayed in its route and there have been no changes to its current 6-night itinerary. The Jayhawk aircrew arrived on scene near the sunken vessel’s onboard emergency position indicating radio beacon's last reported location. The crew initiated search patterns and was able to locate all six of the missing crewmembers hanging on to debris from the sunken vessel which the Coast Guard identified as the Two Brothers. The aircrew deployed a rescue swimmer and hoisted all six of the survivors onto the helicopter.
The Vista was able to return to its previous route after the rescue, and was scheduled to visit Amber Cove Wednesday as part of a six-day itinerary that departed Sunday from Port Canaveral. The cruise team spotted the men off Isla Mujeres, Mexico, on their scheduled route from Texas to the western Caribbean, Carnival said in a news release. After informing the Dominican Republic’s Coast Guard about the remaining unaccounted-for crew members, a search operation was initiated. VIENNA (Reuters) – Eleven people were injured when a Bulgarian cruise ship crashed into a concrete wall in a sluice on the River Danube in the northern Austrian town of Aschach an der Donau overnight,... In May, the Carnival Dream also assisted in a rescue operation that safely recovered 17 people who were stranded in the Belize Channel.

The total cost of the disaster, including victims' compensation, refloating, towing and scrapping costs, is estimated at $2 billion, more than three times the ship's $612 million construction cost. Costa Cruises offered compensation to passengers (to a limit of €11,000 per person) to pay for all damages, including the value of the cruise; one third of the survivors took the offer. The sad anniversary comes as the cruise industry, shut down in much of the world for months because of the coronavirus pandemic, is once again in the spotlight because of COVID-19 outbreaks that threaten passenger safety. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control last month warned people across-the-board not to go on cruises, regardless of their vaccination status, because of the risks of infection. Meanwhile, in April, the Carnival Spirit crew safely rescued 24 people in the Caribbean Sea.
The rescue operation took place early this morning after a small cargo vessel capsized overnight while sailing in the Caribbean. Coast and an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter from Coast Guard Operation Turks and Caicos was launched in the search for the remaining crew members. In May, Carnival Breeze rescued 17 people from a capsized craft near Belize, while in March, Carnival Valor had a similar rescue of three stranded boaters nearly 400 miles offshore of Alabama.
Carnival Sunrise and Carnival Spirit have likewise made rescues in 2023, as have other cruise ships. Costa Concordia was declared a "constructive total loss" by the cruise line's insurer, and her salvage was "one of the biggest maritime salvage operations". On 16 September 2013, the parbuckle salvage of the ship began, and by the early hours of 17 September, the ship was set upright on her underwater cradle.
The Carnival Vista assisted and rescued six individuals stranded at sea close to the Dominican Republic after their cargo vessel overturned Tuesday night. Sadly, six additional crew members are still missing, and a search and rescue operation is currently underway led by local Coast Guard authorities. It is a credit to the ship’s officers and crew that they are alert to such diverse situations and safely able to attend to those in need, whether onboard guests or other mariners in distress. In late October, P&O Cruises’ Iona was instrumental in search and rescue efforts in the North Sea after two cargo vessels collided, with one vessel sinking. Earlier in October, Norwegian Cruise Line’s Norwegian Breakaway helped rescue hundreds of immigrants near Greece, and P&O Cruises Australia’s Pacific Explorer rescued a stranded mariner on October 6 near Vanuatu. Carnival Vista‘s officers spotted the life raft and went into action to bring the six men onto the cruise ship.
The P&O Iona diverted its course in the North Sea in October to assist in rescuing sailors from the sunken freighter Verity. A senior enlisted Navy servicemember has been convicted of attempted espionage for delivering classified information to a foreign government, the Naval Criminal Investigative Service said Friday. The cruise ship immediately contacted the Belize Coast Guard about the craft in distress, and lowered one of the ship’s tenders to begin rescuing the stranded individuals. Local Belize tenders also assisted, and all individuals were then transferred to the Belize Coast Guard. The incident occurred in the Belize Channel, the narrow waterway between the Belize mainland and the offshore barrier reef. While the exact time of the encounter has not been reported, Carnival Dream was scheduled to be in Belize City until 5 p.m.
Because the incident occurred so early in the evening, the cruise ship would have easily been able to adjust its sailing speed overnight en route to Cozumel, and there was no delay in reaching the port destination on time. The 133,500-gross-ton cruise ship can welcome 3,934 passengers aboard at double occupancy, or as many as 4,977 guests when fully booked with all berths filled. Vista is on a six-day Caribbean cruise that departed from Florida’s Port Canaveral on Sunday, according to CruiseMapper.
